Asbestos safety
Maximum asbestos safety by 2040
The presence of asbestos can pose a threat to the environment.
That is why the Flemish government takes asbestos safety very seriously and wants to map the existing asbestos in buildings from before 2001 with the asbestos construction policy. An action plan “asbestos construction” has been developed to guarantee asbestos safety and to make all our homes asbestos-safe by 2040. This plan focuses on the inventory, removal and management of asbestos. Read more about the asbestos inventory on our page “ Asbestos certificate for sale of a home” . And read more about asbestos removal on our “Asbestos removal” page.

The asbestos reduction action plan was approved on 20 July 2018 by the Flemish government and has the following asbestos safety objectives:
- Remove all asbestos cement applications from building environments by 2034 to ensure asbestos safety.
- To maximize asbestos safety, the aim is to remove all easily accessible, non-bonded asbestos applications by 2034.
- Remove asbestos applications that are in poor condition by 2040.
For publicly accessible buildings, these asbestos safety objectives have already been laid down by law. But private and private owners do not yet have legal deadlines for asbestos safety. But campaigns and support measures will also encourage private individuals to work on asbestos safety in their buildings by removing as much asbestos as possible.
